So, before the book even gets to the 1st agreement of “The Four Agreements”, it goes over the foundation that this ancient wisdom is built on. It starts with “The Smokey Mirror”.

So 3,000 years ago, a man had a life-changing dream in which he realized a powerful truth: We are made of light, and we are connected to the stars.

In his dream, under a sky filled with stars, he understood that it wasn’t the stars creating the light, but rather that light itself created everything, including the stars. This light, he realized, was the essence of all life. He saw that all of existence is connected, and that the space between us isn’t empty it’s filled with light and energy. It’s the fog/smoke that prevents us from seeing this truth.

Science side Note: We’ve talked in the past about how science has discovered stardust in our DNA. So the truth is…humans are made of stars. The elements that make up our bodies, such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and even the iron in our blood, were forged in the cores of ancient stars through nuclear fusion. When these stars eventually exploded in supernovae, they scattered these elements across the universe. Over time, these elements became part of new stars, planets, and ultimately, living organisms—including us.

This idea is poetically captured in the phrase “we are stardust,” and it’s an amazing blend of astrophysics and existential wonder. This is our connection to the cosmos at a fundamental level. The same materials that compose the universe flow thru us, emphasizing our connection to the vast, ever-evolving cosmos. We are one.

So the man dreaming realized that while humans are made of stars, our truth goes deeper. We are pure love and light. However, this truth is often hidden by the “smoke” of human perception—our illusions, judgments, and misunderstandings that keep us from seeing each other as reflections of ourselves. This “smoke” is the Dream that clouds our ability to recognize that we are all one.

He called himself the Smokey Mirror, because he saw that matter reflects light, and we are all mirrors of each other. Yet, the smoke between us—the fog of illusion—prevents us from recognizing that we are all the same, all made of light.

This timeless realization, that we are stardust, pure love, and light, reminds us to look beyond the illusions and see the deeper truth in ourselves and in others. The journey is about clearing the smoke and recognizing our true essence. 🙏🏾
