In 2020 when everything was online. I took an online Dharma classes at my temple. And my teacher had us listen to Bodhi Light Tales Podcast. I remember our first one was about changing your mindset. These tales are stories told by a venerable (monk/nun) that relate to a lesson in life. The stories are less than 10 mins, and are good resources to help change our mindset in a positive way.

Today I want to share with you the story called “A Simple Change Of Mind”

The story is about an older woman in a village who constantly cries daily because her two daughters’ businesses that are affected by the weather. The eldest daughter sells umbrellas that do well on rainy days and bad on sunny days. While the youngest sells noodles, which sell best on sunny days but poorly on rainy days.

Every day this women cries when the sky’s is grey because her heart breaks for her youngest daughter noodle business. The next day when the sky is clear and sunny she cries for oldest daughters umbrella business. All of her days are days of sorrow.

The woman cross paths with a Buddhist monk, and asked for his guidance. How could she end this endless sorrow. The monk advises her to focus on the positive aspects of each weather condition. So when the days are sunny focus on how good this day is for your oldest daughters family. When the days are rainy focus on how good this day is for your youngest daughters family. By doing so, she became consistently happy and no longer worried or cried daily.

The moral of the story is that we cannot control the external factors that occur in our lives. However we can control how we react to those factors by focusing our perspective on the positive in the situation and find peace of mind by changing our mindset.
