U.S. Policymakers Examine the Role of Blockchain Technology in Energy Transitions


U.S. federal and state policymakers are increasingly focused on the role of blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT) in ongoing efforts to combat climate change and to facilitate the transition from carbon-based fossil fuels.

In this article, we examine six key developments and players in this area, focusing on two broad categories:

• Initiatives targeting carbon emissions associated with data mining operations (items 1, 2 and aspects of items 3 and 4); and

• Efforts to enhance the transparency and integrity of energy markets and related digital assets (items 5, 6 and aspects of items 3 and 4).
