IREN Stock Falls as Texas Elects Governor Backing Data-Center Moratorium

IREN Limited (NASDAQ: IREN) shares fell 4.25% to $23.42 in early Wednesday trading ahead of the U.S. market open, as Democrat Gina Hinojosa’s election as Texas governor renewed attention to proposed restrictions on data-center development.

Hinojosa defeated incumbent Governor Greg Abbott in the November 3 election after campaigning for a moratorium on new data-center permits until state lawmakers establish stronger protections for electricity customers, water supplies, and local communities. Her proposal calls for greater community involvement in development decisions and measures to prevent households from bearing additional infrastructure costs. By contrast, Abbott’s existing permitting pause is tied to regulatory audits.

The election brings attention to IREN’s 2,000-megawatt Sweetwater data-center hub in Texas, which was conditionally included as Base Load in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Batch Zero grid-connection process in September. The designation means the planned load had already undergone sufficient study for inclusion in that category. However, it remains subject to further approvals and does not guarantee a final grid connection for the planned capacity.

Hinojosa is scheduled to take office on January 19, 2027. Her election has not itself imposed a new moratorium or suspended IREN’s construction activities. Her campaign has not specified how its proposed restrictions would apply to projects already under construction, and IREN has not announced any election-related changes to its Sweetwater construction schedule.

IREN’s Sweetwater Project Faces Existing Grid Approval Risks

IREN’s Sweetwater hub comprises Sweetwater 1, with 1,400 MW of planned capacity, and Sweetwater 2, with another 600 MW. The company has energized the high-voltage substation at Sweetwater 1 and is constructing 300 MW of gross data-center capacity, targeting delivery in the fourth quarter of 2027.

IREN also operates a data-center campus at Childress, Texas, with 750 MW of total planned power capacity, bringing its announced Texas site capacity to 2,750 MW. Microsoft accepted Horizon 1, a 50 MW IT-load deployment at Childress, in August. That delivered deployment is distinct from the campus’s larger planned capacity.

IREN had already disclosed regulatory risks affecting its Texas expansion. In its fiscal 2026 Form 10-K, the company warned that changes to ERCOT’s Batch Zero procedures could delay connecting its Texas projects to the electricity grid or affect how much power would be available to them.

On September 21, Abbott directed the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to halt data-center permits until ERCOT completes its audit. He also directed state agencies to withhold related regulatory approvals until they receive the information needed to assess the projects’ electricity-grid and water impacts.

IREN Shares Retreat After Tuesday’s 11% Rebound

The early Wednesday decline followed an 11.08% gain in the previous session, when IREN closed at $24.46, ending three consecutive declines.

The stock declined approximately 23.6% between October 28, when it closed at $28.84, and November 2, when it closed at $22.02. At the latest quoted premarket price, it remained about 18.8% below the October 28 level, despite the previous session’s recovery.

The election results also coincided with broader weakness in technology stocks and U.S. equity-index futures overnight. Shares of other AI infrastructure companies, including CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) and Nebius Group (NASDAQ: NBIS), also declined during overnight trading.

Separately, IREN Limited Tokenized bStocks (IRENB) traded at $23.16, up 1.17% over the preceding 24 hours, according to CoinMarketCap. The tokenized instrument trades separately from IREN’s Nasdaq-listed shares, and its 24-hour percentage change covers a different trading period from the equity’s premarket decline.
