What is OriginTrail?
OriginTrail is an ecosystem based on the Ethereum blockchain that has use cases in the supply industry. It aims to connect supply chain networks all over the world by enabling a trusted data exchange that is universal and collaborative in nature. The OriginTrial Decentralized Network (ODN) is an open-source protocol that facilitates data sharing between various companies and organizations that benefit from the protocol. It improves interoperability and enables a seamless data exchange between the parties. The information is securely shared in the completely decentralised network, which is monitored using oracles and artificial intelligence. ODN is a middle layer protocol, so it can interact with various blockchain networks. It already supports Ethereum, xDAI, and HyperLedger Fabric with both Polkadot integration and its own blockchain, StartFleet Chain, pending launch in 2021.
Among the core features of this network is data interoperability. It’s built with globally recognized standards, thus enabling the homogeneity of data systems. This allows data from both legacy and blockchain-based systems to align efficiently. Once data is published on the network, a cryptographic hash is attached to the data, which is used to verify if the data is manipulated at any point in the network. TRAC is the native token of the ODN, which also behaves as its utility token. Essentially it acts as the binding factor for all the entities participating in the protocol. It’s used as an incentive for the data holder’s good behavior and retains the data’s immutability. It’s also used as a payment for the data holder’s time and resources. The token has a maximum supply of 500 million tokens that are pre-mined and non-inflationary.

What to consider when buying OriginTrail
Investors often perceive cryptocurrencies as high reward financial instruments that help them to multiply their wealth quickly. But there are several risks associated with the plethora of cryptocurrencies available in the crypto market. Here’s what you need to be aware of before including TRAC in your token basket:
- Reputation: OriginTrial is in collaboration with several high-profile entities such as the European Union, Oracle, British Standard Institutes (BSI) and GS1 Slovenija. It has also caught the attention of the World Economic Forum (WEF), which included this protocol as one of the top blockchain supply solutions in a report in 2020 and also mentioned it in an article where the protocol’s Essential COVID-19 Supplies Repository was described as an “Effective use of blockchain technology.” These endorsements add credibility to OriginTrial and its use cases.
- Integration: Since the protocol follows GS1, W3C and Web3 data standards, it ensures that major corporations’ data is also compatible with the platform, thus seamlessly integrating data from legacy systems and blockchain systems on the same network. This could increase institutional adoption of this protocol.
- Demand: Due to the inherent nature of the value proposition of the platform, it would only appeal to institutions and may never gain mass appeal. This means that the price of the token could be related to factors that have nothing to do with the crypto market at large but rather institutional demand and activity on the protocol.
