The US Senate Committee on Armed Services has recommended that the Department of Defence (DOD) explore blockchain technology to potentially revolutionise national security.
This directive signifies a notable change in the government’s strategy towards new technology, which now focuses on investigating innovative solutions for supply chain management and other essential defence applications.
The committee’s recommendation, detailed in the fiscal year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) report released on July 9, 2024, explicitly instructs Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to investigate and test potential blockchain applications within the DOD. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of blockchain’s potential to enhance the integrity and security of defence operations.
“Blockchain technology has the potential to enhance the cryptographic integrity of the defence supply chain, improve data integrity, and reduce the risk of the manipulation or corruption of certain types of data by near-peer competitors,” the committee noted in its report. This statement underscores the strategic importance of blockchain in safeguarding national interests against potential threats from rival nations.
The Senate committee’s vision extends beyond mere experimentation. They call for a comprehensive exploration of how blockchain can be leveraged “to achieve national security goals and to create secure, transparent, accountable, and auditable data related to supply chains.” This approach signals a forward-thinking stance that could position the United States at the forefront of technological innovation in defence.
To ensure progress and accountability, Secretary Austin has been directed to provide a detailed briefing by April 1, 2025. This briefing must address six key areas, including:
- A plan for pilot programs or research and development efforts to explore blockchain use in national security applications.
- Identifying benefits and risks associated with blockchain in supply chain tracking and management.
- Analysis of current blockchain adoption in the supply chain industry and by foreign countries like China and Russia.
- Feasibility studies and cost estimates for implementation.
Why is the US exploring blockchain for national security?
The announcement came as the global blockchain adoption landscape continues to mature. The US government’s proactive position comes as other nations, including those that could one day be adversaries, are making advances in this area. This trend suggests Washington is eager to ensure the US maintains its technological superiority. While the DOD explores blockchain for national security, the shift parallels a more significant movement within US politics towards cryptocurrency advocacy.
Just recently, the Republican National Committee passed a draft policy platform expressing support for crypto and Bitcoin adoption. This platform, highlighted on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign website, states, “We will defend the right to mine Bitcoin, and ensure every American has the right to self-custody their Digital Assets and transact free from Government Surveillance and Control.”
The promise and perils of blockchain in national defence
Introducing blockchain technology into the intricate national defence network will require a lot more time, energy, and willingness to navigate uncharted territories; scalability, integration with existing systems, and cybersecurity implications will be important questions that need answering.
Nevertheless, the potential benefits are immense. It is possible that a blockchain-based defence supply chain would offer unprecedented levels of transparency, make fraud less likely, and help the military keep track of managing its critical assets. Further, its built-in tamper resistance trait could help keep individual custody of sensitive data safe from cyberattacks.
As the April 2025 deadline for the DOD’s blockchain briefing approaches, all eyes will be on the Pentagon to see how this ambitious initiative unfolds. If successful, it could revolutionise US national defence operations and set a new standard for technological innovation in government agencies worldwide.
