Rise & Grind 👑 🙌🏾

“What we’re talking about transcends any
particular religion and doesn’t even require
that you believe in something spiritual, just
that you come to accept that there is this
beautiful essence in you and everyone else,
and that it can be accessed simply by opening
space inside.” – IFS Institute

So what are real world examples of the 4 main parts in IFS therapy? And are there connections 🧵 between this form of therapy and ideologies & theories we’ve been receiving?

Examples and solutions grounded in approaches we’ve covered in past weeks:

1. Exiles

Example: Alex feels intense shame whenever they remember a humiliating high school experience. Alex’s Exile carries that deep embarrassment and fear of rejection, so Alex avoids situations that might bring up similar feelings, like public speaking.

Solution: Self-Compassion & Wu Wei

Wu Wei (effortless action) is about easing into acceptance. Alex can try practicing self-compassion, reminding themselves that everyone has difficult memories. By mindfully acknowledging the Exile’s feelings rather than avoiding them, Alex can start to heal.

Practical Tip: Journaling could help Alex connect with this Exile. Writing a compassionate letter to this younger self can be powerful, allowing Alex to begin releasing shame without force.

2. Managers

Example: Jamie’s Manager part kicks in whenever they’re about to submit an important work project. The Manager drives Jamie to check every detail repeatedly, fearing any mistake could harm their reputation. This perfectionist part keeps Jamie up at night, pushing them to overwork and avoid “failure.”

Solution: First Agreement & Mindfulness

First Agreement: “Be impeccable with your word.” Jamie can remember that perfection isn’t necessary to express who they are. Mindfulness helps Jamie notice when the Manager takes over so they can calmly reassure it, “This doesn’t need to be perfect.”

Practical Tip: Jamie could use a “done, not perfect” mantra to keep things in perspective, gradually building confidence and reducing the Manager’s anxiety.

3. Firefighters

Example: After a breakup, Casey’s Firefighter part urges them to party and drink heavily to avoid dealing with the sadness. These impulsive distractions are Firefighter strategies to “put out the fire” of emotional pain, even though they aren’t helpful long-term.

Solution: Wu Wei & Self-Reflection

Wu Wei teaches Casey to slow down and allow feelings to emerge naturally rather than reacting impulsively. Instead of drinking, Casey could sit with their emotions in a calm space and focus on understanding what this part of them truly needs.

Practical Tip: Practicing deep breathing or guided meditation can ground Casey, helping them recognize their pain without numbing it. Self-reflection, like journaling about the breakup, could lead to a healthier release.

4. Self

Example: Madison finds herself always stressed, juggling work, school, and relationships. She doesn’t realize that the different parts within her (like an inner critic, a perfectionist, and a nurturer) are all vying for attention. But with all this noise, her true “Self” isn’t leading.

Solution: Heart Coherence & Taoism’s Stillness

Through Heart Coherence, Madison can quiet her mind and get in touch with her Self. Practicing calm breathing and focusing on her heartbeat brings clarity, so her Self can listen to each part and balance their needs.

Practical Tip: Madison could spend a few minutes each morning in quiet reflection, letting her mind settle. This stillness helps her connect with her Self, building the confidence and compassion to guide her other parts.

In each example, we see that understanding our inner parts and responding from a place of compassion and awareness can create balance. By bringing our true Self into the lead, we become more intentional and connected, moving toward a grounded, harmonious life.
