Rise & Grind 👑 🙌🏾

So What’s “The Art of Not Trying: Lao Tzu’s” about? Should we really do nothing at all, and that’s who things start to work? No. Wu Wei, a central concept in Taoism, doesn’t mean doing nothing at all; instead, it means “effortless action” or “action without force.”

It’s about aligning with the natural flow of things and allowing actions to arise spontaneously without unnecessary struggle or effort. So doing things without forcing them. Imagine a surfer riding a wave. The surfer isn’t forcing the wave to move; they’re moving with it, effortlessly adjusting to its flow. Wu Wei is like that—taking action that feels natural and easy, rather than forcing things to happen. It’s about being in tune with the world and responding to it in a way that feels almost effortless.

Aside from Winnie The Pooh, is where else can it be witnessed in action? Are there Wu Wei’s with a modern twist?

– Tech Giants; Google’s 20% Time: Google’s policy of letting employees spend 20% of their time on passion projects has birthed genius innovations like Gmail and Google Maps. Turns out, letting go can lead to creative breakthroughs.

– Education; Montessori Mavericks: Montessori schools, with their self-directed learning approach, are raising the next generation of independent, creative thinkers. Kids who think outside the box? Yes, PLEASE, this is exactly what we need to get rid of the social “norms” we are witnessing today. We are interconnected and one, but our truth is within us individually. We can’t live our truth, if it’s molded in someone else’s “truth”

– Health and Wellness; Yoga Influencers: Instagram yogis who preach the power of going with the flow, both on and off the mat, are living testaments to Wu Wei. Their zen vibes are as contagious.

– Urban Planning; Bike-Friendly Cities: Cities like Amsterdam, which prioritize bikes over cars, create a natural, harmonious flow of movement and cleaner air. It’s a modern twist on Wu Wei – less traffic, more happiness (as well as health & wellness)

– Sports; Zen Athletes: NBA players who meditate and visualize their game enter the zone effortlessly, making game-winning shots seem like a breeze. Think of your favorite clutch player channeling their inner Lao Tzu, and instead of forcing the shot, they are effortless bringing to fruition what they’ve already created/seen in their minds eye.

These practices didn’t come from doing nothing. There was still actions being taken. However, when time was prioritized for passions, restrictions removed to foster thinking outside of the box, practicing going with the flow & harmonious flow of movement with others, along with meditation and visualization positive outcomes were created.

By adopting Lao Tzu’s art of not trying, we can turn our daily grind into a graceful dance, achieving more by doing less and letting the universe do its thing. Releasing ourselves from any self inflected stress we cause by trying to control everything. Because sometimes, the best way to get ahead is to just go with the flow.
